In the face of evidence, people still believe in certain things. Even though there is tons of evidence suggesting that the Bible is wrong, people believe.
Now, take relationships. If things started happening that looked like my wife was cheating on me, I would investigate. I would approach her. I would not take it on faith that it was impossible that cheating could happen. I would trust her, BUT if hard evidence was given to me, I would approach her. (I am not talking about a random occurance, I mean something fairly substantial like a hotel bill for example.) And the key here is I LOVE HER, yet still, I would investigate. (hi honey
)
Scientists have a mountain of evidence that Evolution is true, and Creationism is not. People gladly rely on science every day, yet in this one fact, they disagree.
Back to relationships. What happens if someone is given evidence that a spouse is cheating, and does nothing? ANY person who knows them will say things like “they are blinded by love, not seeing the truth” “They are listening to their heart and not their head” “they are hoping it’s not true, if people
want something bad enough, they will believe it, even when it’s right in their face that something is wrong”.
Now lets extend the analogy of religion and relationships even further. What if the spouse had everyone in their family tell them the spouse was not cheating? What if everyone they trusted and loved looked at the evidence and said ‘no, he isn’t cheating’. Would they investigate? And what if everyone they loved had told them all their life that a hotel bill is not grounds for investigation, that people never cheat, everyone is ALWAYS faithful. Would they investigate?
And yet, this is the world of a religious person isn’t it? Generally people follow the religion they are born into. As people say ‘kids are impressionable’. Yes, the are. So if you tell a person all their life that god exists, what are the chances they will question it? They will laugh at something small like scientists saying we evolved over millions of years (in the analogy of the cheating, this is the hotel bill) and would only change their minds if something irrefutable happened. In the case of the spouse that doesn’t want to believe - they might need to catch the person in the act. They would need proof.
But, there is no way to prove that God doesn’t exist, so that will not ever happen for these people.
I remember asking a reverend once: “Well what happens to all the Hindus in the world? They will all go to Hell because they have not accepted Christ as their savior?” His answer was: “everyone is given the chance to accept Christ, they made their choice.”
MADE THEIR CHOICE? Raised in a country where Christianity is an extreme minority, everyone in your family being Hindu, raising you to believe in that religion. These people should just realize, somehow, that Christ is the way, and Hinduism is not?
It doesn’t matter what answer a religious person gives, the fact that 900 million Hindus will all go to Hell because they did not accept Christ…THAT’S crazy.
And yet even when shown how ludicrous this was, he still believed.
