A bad diet may be the cause of a lot of criminal activity.

They give kids Ritalin for ADD, maybe its just a bad diet?

Important parts of the article:

a paper published in the latest edition of Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine

children who watch more television eat more of the foods it advertises

The researchers had conducted a double-blind, controlled experiment in a jail for chronic offenders aged between 13 and 17. Many of the boys there were deficient in certain nutrients

among young adult prisoners given supplements of the vitamins, minerals and fatty acids in which they were deficient, disciplinary offences fell by 26%

Researchers in Finland found that all 68 of the violent offenders they tested during another study suffered from reactive hypoglycaemia: an abnormal tolerance of glucose caused by an excessive consumption of sugar, carbohydrates and stimulants such as caffeine.

The more junk you eat, the less room you have for foods which contain the chemicals the brain needs

As Graham Harvey’s new book We Want Real Food shows, industrial farming, dependent on artificial fertilisers, has greatly reduced the mineral content of vegetables, while the quality of meat and milk has also declined. Nor do these findings suggest that a poor diet is the sole cause of crime and antisocial behaviour. But the studies I have read suggest that any government that claims to take crime seriously should start hitting the advertisers.

SOYLENT GREEN IS PEOPLE! ARRRHRHHRHHHGGGGG….

Interesting study, but it too strange for me

Studies are overrated. You can “prove” every theory if you want. Just use your own estimation and dont make life more complicated than it is by reading too much of such crap. Thats just my 2 cents.

  7. Zornon 25 Nov 2007 at 1:55 pm

Tom, by your logic, we should ignore everything. Studies show that smoking causes cancer? bah, studies can show anything, smoke away…

    right?

this isnt just one random study. its a paper published in a medical jounal that cites mutliple studies. Surely you must admit this carries more weight than just one study that showed a correlation?

  8. Thomason 25 Nov 2007 at 2:25 pm

By my logic you can trust that (or even any) study and adjust your life/thinking according to it and you would be as right by doing so as another guy who reads that same study and waits for another study to prove the opposite.

The thing is that I read so many studies in my life (all of them considered to be highly reliable sources) and so many of them were “refuted” sooner or later. So take my statement just as an expression of tiredness and as an expression of my actual pessimistic believe that we know nothing. ;)

I believe the study cause when my glucose levels drop im a whole different person. Diet and personally are definitely correlated.

  10. Thomason 26 Nov 2007 at 3:30 am

Diet and personality are correlated, true. But personality is also dependant on many other things so the conclusion “wrong diet causes crime” is wrong since this would imply a monocausality.

  11. Zornon 26 Nov 2007 at 10:31 am

Thats why I said ‘diet *may* cause *a lot* (I should have said ’some’) criminal activity. ;)

  12. Thomason 27 Nov 2007 at 7:38 am

That point goes to you Shane ;)

There seem to be more and more of these articles about bad diet causing real problems in people especially children. I have often wondered if this is also the cause of some food allergies like nut allergies, and also if violent or suicidal behavior can be directly attributed to diet issues.

I don’t buy it either. Obviously your diet affects you physically, but to say that its going to lead you down the life of crime? or to say that missing certain minerals is going to make you a criminal? i think thats stretching it.

  21. Zornon 04 Dec 2007 at 8:59 am

it isnt saying that you could be a good person, and if you forget to eat your vegetables, you turn into a serial killer.

it is saying it is a factor. take a kid in the edge, bad environment, friends are delinquents… diet can be one factor of many that push children to criminal behavior.

how would you explain the study? was it coincidence that violence dropped as they improved the diet of the juvenile delinquents?

Oreos + Hamburgers = Crime. I know I get pissed off when I don’t have my pringles so I can agree.

I believe that diet and personality are correlated. In a bad health condition you can’t work properly and its hamper your personality.
    Thanks for shearing.

I agree that definitely junk food, among other factors, can be considered responsible for antisocial behavior. It is known, as an extreme case, that higher amount of lead can cause violent behavior of minors. Similarly, to a lesser extent, junk food can affect our global state of mind, and correspondingly affect our behavior.

And wouldn’t it be interesting to find out that the US’ big crime problems could be greatly reduced if we subsidized healthy food? (We only subsidize corn, soybeans, wheat, meat, and a few other things, no healthy vegetables or fruits get any sizable subsidies from the government…)
