This is just a theory of mine.
A few months ago I watched one of those ‘to catch a predator’ shows on Dateline. Scary stuff.
Then a week later, I saw they were doing the same theme on the show.
And a month later, again, the same theme. I thought ‘wow this is odd, they are literally doing the same show over and over.’ And I noticed the threat of child abuse and abduction via the Internet is really pushed by the media. The media will run any story that causes fear simply because people are more likely to watch it. If it affects our lives, and puts us or our family in danger, we will pay attention. Unfortunately this is the way humans are wired, and could possibly be why the US media does not cover much of what happens in other countries. We just will not pay attention like we would if there is a story that pertains to our own lives. Not that we would not watch a story about something happening in another country, but we are more likely to watch the threatening one. And in the US, capitalism rules, so every media company will run whatever they feel will get the most viewers. Sad, really.
Could the fanfare about Internet predators be used to push legislation to regulate the Internet? Politicians are not stupid. Well… most aren’t anyway. They know if they just passed legislation where the government cracked down on the Internet and started regulating things, people would revolt. Or at least, they would get pretty pissed off.
Much easier to just bide your time, and get the people to want government regulation and oversight. If enough people are scared of the Dangerous Internetz™ they will beg the government to step in and ‘make things safe.’ John McCain proposed legislation in 2006 that would require message boards and blogs to ‘report suspicious or criminal behavior.
Notice the title of the law is “Stop the Online Exploitation of Our Children Act of 2006″. The bill was not ever voted on, from what I can see, but if it did, how horrible would any Senator look voting against this act? “It’s to protect the Children!” This is just one bill that I knew of. How many more are being worked on?
I have two kids, and I want to keep them safe. To do that, I will (when they get old enough) keep the computer downstairs, and not let them have one in their room. I will make sure the monitor is visible, and not facing the corner so I can see what is going on. I will be nosy, and annoy my kids.
I will not give the government power over what I feel is the only hope for Democracy we have left, just to feel a little safer. Ever notice you can find statistics of how many children are sexually assaulted, but not how many were assaulted by people they met on the Internet? That is because most of the time, these attacks and molestations, unfortunately, come from family members or friends of the family of the child. Each year there are hundreds of thousands of children reported missing, but only a hundred or so that are kidnapped by ’strangers’. And According to a 2005 Duke study children are more safe now than they were in 1975.
Lets keep our children safe, but lets not give more and more power to the Federal government to do so, when I think we all know that the power would end up getting abused.
If you think this sounds weird, watch the Documentary ‘The Century of Self’, and how societies’ opinions can be changed or swayed. Truth is stranger than fiction.
