Autistic Girl uses computer to communicate. Very articulate person that explains her frustation at being autistic. Amazing.

Shane February 19th, 2008

This is probably the most jaw dropping story I have read in a long time.

This quote choked me up. The girl, Carly said:

“Autism is hard because you want to act one way, but you can’t always do that. It’s sad that sometimes people don’t know that sometimes I can’t stop myself and they get mad at me. If I could tell people one thing about autism it would be that I don’t want to be this way. But I am, so don’t be mad. Be understanding.”

So sad to think of how frustrating it must be to be autistic.

A recent study found that 1 in 150 children is afflicted with autism there. This study only tested 14 states though, so it may not be indicative of the national average, but it was the largest study ever done on childhood autism.

No one knows what causes autism, but the number of children that are afflicted with it is climbing. Unfortunately it is probably some sort of chemical or pollution. Our way of life does not seem to promote health.

“Our way of life does not seem to promote health.” Well this conclusion was a bit hasty imo…at least it´s a bit to general. First off, as you already stated there are only few studies about autism, studies which have only just have come to our knowledge. We dont have enough reliable data to compare the number of autistics to former times and therefore we can only say thatf.e. during the last 15 yrs the number has increased but maybe it was higher back in the 19th or 18th century…who knows. Therefore conclusions like yours MIGHT be false. However I agree that our way of life does promote a lower level of health than actually possible due to internal (our very own attitude of doing no sports and wrong nutrition) and external factors (pollution of environment etc.). Still I do believe that we are healthier than ppl from lets say 1750. We live longer and better (in terms of healthiness) so physically we have improved Id say (at least until now, our recent attitude of ruining our bodies with bad nutrition might/does cause a decline in that progress). But what about the psychical side? Again there we lack of data to make a reliable conclusion (comparison to the past) but I have the feeling that we run mad more and more due to increasing social stress.

Sorry for the lack of eloquence in my reply but Im at work now and Im hurrying to get this reply done before the next customer steps into my shop. :P

No problem at all, considering English is not your native language.. I think most people would understand :)

This was what I was saying. In general, our way of life is not healthy. We might be healthier than those in 1750, but we could be MUCH healthier than we are today, but we might have to give up some luxuries. (certain plastics, food additives, etc)

off-topic: You once had a link on your site which lead to a page where you could search for website-rankings. Do you still have that link anywhere? thx in advance

I suspect autism is probably caused by some prescription pill because although things are more polluted, the rise of people taking pills in the last few years has skyrocketed.
