Income growth in the US. A chart of sadness.

Shane April 29th, 2008

This is a chart showing income growth in the US from the 1950s to the 1970s, and then from the 1970s until the present.

Not a pretty picture.

Income Growth by Income Percentile

I don’t think there is much for me to say here, the chart speaks for itself.

Hunger could be eliminated tomorrow. No joke. So why doesn’t it happen?

List of countries by percentile of population suffering from undernourishment. Made by :en:User:Lobizón, using Wikipedia's Image via WikipediaAccording to Raj Patel, author of Stuffed and Starved: The Hidden Battle for the World Food System, there are four reasons that food prices are rising, causing riots around the world.

Ethanol, poor harvests last year, the price of oil, and increased demand for meat. Fertilizers and pesticides are made from oil, so increased oil prices hurt poor nations most. Other sources say that it is also caused by “The World Bank want(ing) developing countries to introduce market reforms, including the abolition of protective tariffs, a move that often causes massive damage to local agriculture”, climate change, and food speculators.

eBay sellers seize a price gouging opportunity in the plastic baby bottle (BPA) scare…

Shane April 26th, 2008

Nalgene IImage by Chealion via FlickrBPA is a chemical used in polycarbonate (plastic) containers. There is growing evidence that this chemical causes problems in humans.

Canada is going to ban the import of these bottles. This was enough to convince me to switch our baby bottles to glass, after finding out our bottles were made of polycarbonate. If you have ever had a baby, you know that once they get used to a certain nipple, you will have a hard time switching them to another type of bottle… unless you get lucky enough to find another bottle type with a nipple similar enough that the baby does not notice the change.

Chipin to get Helen Thomas some flowers…

Shane April 24th, 2008

Tired of the Bush administration claiming waterboarding is not torture? Well one reporter, at least, is asking the tough questions.

A guy on reddit.com said everyone should get her some flowers.

So another guy went to chipin.com, and set up a donation page so people could donate money to get her flowers, so that she would know some people do appreciate her speaking out. At the time I am writing this, the #1 story on reddit.com is the link to donate. For reference, I had a story here get to #8, and I had 20,000 visitors in one day.

What group do you think is more anti-war: college educated, high school educated, or drop outs?

Lennon at an anti-war protest in Manhattan, New York City in 1972.Image via WikipediaIn Lies My Teacher Told Me: Everything Your American History Textbooks Got Wrong” the author exposes a lot of amazing information, but one thing really caught me by surprise more than any of the others.

The author, James W. Loewen, explains that during the Vietnam war, polling institutions starting taking demographic information about the people being polled. He said that in his classes (he is a Sociology professor at the University of Vermont) he would ask his students to fill out a sheet estimating what percentage of people were ‘hawkish’ or ‘dovish’ - pro-war, or anti-war. He split the sheet into three categories, College Educated, High School Educated, and Less Than High School Education.

This is basically asking: “do you think (insert level of education here) people tend to be more ‘pro-war’ or ‘anti-war’”.
