Youtube changing politics?

Shane May 18th, 2008

This is a pretty neat video showing McCain’s many hypocrisies.

I also found an interesting article on techdirt.com about how Youtube is holding politicians accountable. It’s a good read.

Ten years ago, hell five years ago even, if a politician said something that contradicted a statement he had made a year earlier, the public relied on people at the big media companies to hopefully pick up on it, and make an issue of it.

This puts a lot of power in a few people’s hands. Today though, average people can make a quick youtube video in a matter of minutes and expose a politician’s lies. Within hours, that video can be spread across the Internet, and seen by millions.

Ten years ago, only Big Business could do such a thing.

I would say this is immensely important in the fight to bring real Democracy back to the US.

People should be allowed to change their opinion. But if you are changing your mind like other people change their socks (f.e. Mr. McCain in that particular yutube vid) then you dont deserve to be in a honorable position.

The real problem is that he doesn’t just change his stance on issues, as the video starts out, he talks about Gen Petraus walking around Baghdad without any protection - which is completely false.

He claims to know economics, and then suddenly doesn’t know anything about economics.

The youtube revolution is changing politics as we speak. I also think it gives users their own way to bash politicians… it could be just as bad as normal media outlets if you ask me.

it’s not just politicians that frequently submit contrary opinions to people.
If you recorded the words of the average person as much as the words of a politicians, you would quick see that people state contrary positions all the time unconsciously. In fact, you would see that people claim to believe in different things depending on who they talk to.

    true believers are incredibly rare.

Despair, do you really think these Politicians are just normal people that are changing their opinions? That the apparent lies are just normal human behavior?

YouTube certainly changed many things in many ways. This is the power of technology. But i don’t think these videos change politics. It just helps them change faster, more like a catalyst.

This just proves that you have to know where you stand and don’t change what you say. With the resources we have on the internet, he doesn’t have time to take back what he’s said or keep changing it.
