In case you missed it, bees are dying.

So… few governments seem to be worrying about it, and it gets little press. The linked article states there may be a link between Genetically Modified Corn, and the Bee issue, called Colony Collapse disorder. Recent articles are starting to sound more alarming. When do we say ‘hey, without bees, we die. Maybe someone should look into this?’

I think, at some point, we need to say ‘Capitalism just does not work.’ We are modifying our food to make more profit!

Think about this for a second. Producing food more efficiently creates population growth. Do we really need more people on the planet? In the last year I have read that: we are in danger of a natural gas shortage in the US. We have world oil supply problems (Peak Oil). OPEC nations are likely inflating their oil reserve numbers. It is likely that US Coal deposits are less than expected (Peak Coal). We are having water problems all over the world (Peak Water). Australia is looking at desalinization. California has major problems. Hmm. Oh, there will likely be a shortage of Helium soon. Most helium comes from Texas, and they are running out. Helium is used in making electronics, if I remember correctly. That will suck, won’t it, to find out that electronics will get expensive because we like our balloons to float? Admittedly, I only read this once, and do not remember the source.

How stupid are we, to continue to increase our population, knowing that resources are finite? Copper is worth $3 a pound at a scrap yard…

Yet we have scientists modifying corn so that it is resistant to Round Up. AN OIL BASED PESTICIDE. Now we can spray an entire field with RoundUp, and not kill the corn. Did you know fertilizers are made from oil too? Did you know that without fertilizers, the ground would lose nutrients far too fast for nature to replace them? Without oil, we cannot grow food at the rates we do now…

Capitalism doesn’t work. We lasted longer than Communism, but the game is up. With Capitalism there is no throttle. We run full out, every day, all day. Always push for more, use more, sell more, make more. The world is telling us to go screw ourselves.

We better start listening.

I agree with you. It really is crazy how our food chain works these days. The majority of things we can buy in supermarkets in the UK could actually be grown in our own country, instead of getting it from miles away. And with the process requiring loads of plastic to cover the crops, this just worsens our dependance on oil. Madness.

I mentioned to a family member in passing that my son and I had been thinking about planting a bee garden. It was then that I first heard of the bee problem. Thanks for this article, I was able to get more in-depth info from it.

From what I’ve read, bees pollinate about a third of all the food we eat (this is stats from Haagen-Dazs site about helping honey bees). With all the people in the world, we can’t afford to feed all of them if we lose that much of our crops. Thanks for helping in the awareness of this dilemma. I hope media finally catches on before its too late.

I too have been following this issue and if the trend continues, the implications are more frightening than the whole “oil thing”. A new theory (to me) that I’ve been reading about lately is that the bees are dying because of the increase of the practice of moving hives over long distances to pollinate crops. For a price, of course.
Moving hives is not new, and making money from the tireless work of our fuzzy little friends also is not new. But what seems to be different now is that greedy keepers are temporarily moving their hives hundreds of miles for only a short period. They will then return after some weeks, discombobulated and travel weary. Screw oil, we need food!

Damn that’s worrying. I agree with you with should stop playing with GM, cloning and all that stuff. Leave things are they are, as they were designed. We play with nature yet we don’t know the consequences it can have. We could very well cause our own destruction with stupidities like this.

You are so right in this article! I have 42 “bees houses” and with everyday they are so slow and die much of them. Bees are one of the most important insects on the earth, we must help them not kill them… Great article, thanks!
