(Update, poll removed, as it was severely slowing down page loads.)

Look to the right –>

I try not to just post about some news that is on TV or in the major newspapers. Unless it is huge, or I feel I can offer an alternative view on something, I do not post about anything I consider common knowledge. This is called blogspam, and I hate it. Too many blogs will post ‘Obama is in Iraq today, I love it!” and link to a major site, newspaper, etc. If I feel I can offer an alternative view, or show that what is being presented by the major media is skewed, then I will do this.

Otherwise, I try to use information from multiple sources to provide people with a better picture. I make exceptions if I feel that what I am writing about is not common knowledge. For example, I just read an article written in the 1970s by an award winning Economist that clearly explains what causes ‘booms and busts’, recessions, the Great Depression, and why we continue to use our system, knowing that it causes such instability.

I will be posting about this article soon, but might only use it alone as a source. I feel though that the knowledge is not common knowledge, and that I can make it a little easier to read for people who are like me: blue collar people who are trying to understand what is going on. I have spent almost two years learning about our government and our financial system, and I think what is missing is that Economists are like Computer Geeks (I am one, I can say this): they talk over the average person’s head. Any time you have specialized knowledge, you have to remember that most people will not understand what you are talking about. I know if I had read this article two years ago, I would have been lost. Now though, I can understand it. My goal is to make it so anyone can understand what this guy is saying.

My poll is to ask readers if I should continue to only post the way I do, or should I post more, even if I cannot offer any further insight into what I am posting. Example: Keith Olbermann last night showed how CBS removed McCain’s mistake about the Surge in Iraq. Normally I will not post this, unless I can provide other information to add to it.

So far it seems people do not want this sort of thing on the site, but even though I get 100-150 people a day visiting here, only 5 people have voted in the two weeks that the poll has been up. :)

I am very interested in people’s opinions on this.

Voted: “only post more thoughtful posts :)
Reason is simple: Quality over Quantity. Keep up the good posts and you wont go wrong.

  2. Kravitsk says:

Great Post, very interesting. The truth is that the truth hardly gets to us.

  3. Thomas says:

    Quality over quantity imo.

Grrr…..The poll didnt show up until I clicked the reply button. Stupid blog tech. :P

  4. Thomas says:

…maybe this is one reason why only few people voted so far? That the possl doesnt show up properly at the frontpage I mean….

BTw: Greetings from the country which is atm visited by Mr. Barack Obama (Germany) ;)

He wasnt allowed to make a speech at the Reichstag although he wanted to. So he “only” got the “Siegessäule” (Victory Column) in Berlin. ~50.000 spectators…wow :D

  5. Thomas says:

lol….sorry for the spam. The “possl” in the post above actually means “poll”……sorry for the typo, I blame it on my keyboard.

  6. hank says:

    Quality over quantity indeed!

one reason you might not be getting the votes you hoped for is that the voting button is kinda small – think you can put it in the post itself?

  7. New Age says:

Voted and I was not wrong so more than 70% said the same. I have many blogs and it take many days for me to publish a post on a single one but my readers love to read and visit my blog.

  8. Shane says:

@Tom – my blog just does not like you :/

@Hank, good point, I am not sure I can change it without resetting it though…

  9. Steve says:

As I have seen results, 39% people are in the favor to have posts and only posts, they are not concerned with quality. Don’t go after then, Publish less but Publish well. Don’t let down the quality of your blog.

  10. Thomas says:

Quality over quantity every single time. If you present your readers with quality, they will return. Not only that, word of mouth is the most powerful networking tool in the blogosphere.

  11. UptakeInOH says:

I swear, that poll was not here the other day when I stopped by. I’m off to vote right now! (Quality over quantity, fyi.)

  12. A. Georgiev says:

If the poll was here I was voted for you because I like your blog. If I can doing something for you and for your blog just tell me. :)

  13. UptakeInOH says:

I see that you removed the poll. Just curious what you have decided? I know I see a clear winner in the comments section, but am curious as to what the actual tally number was.

  14. Shane says:

It was about 20 to 4 in favor of less updates. It works out because I have been extremely busy lately :)

The problem is that writing posts that offer new insight on a subject are 100 times harder than reposting some news of the day with your own opinion. :/ That is why I have to update less often if I post what I consider ‘quality’ writing.

  16. You should put a new one up, I’ll vote.
