I think this question needs to be presented to the Ann Coulters of the world. I routinely see people claiming that American is ‘godless’ and that the problems we are facing are mostly caused because America has ‘lost it’s faith’.
Which is it? Option one would make sense. If people are claiming to be religious but really are not, this would explain away all of our problems, because we all know the damned Atheists are the source of all our problems right?
Option two also makes sense. Maybe the US really is 80% Christian, but many Christians are evil bastards.
Either way, I think people need to step into reality for a moment. If being Christian makes us good people, and is the source of our morals, why are all those Christian girls filling Girls Gone Wild videos. Is the Internet filled with porn just from the Americans that make up the 15% of Atheists and Agnostics bracket? Wow, that is a lot of porn from just a small group of people…
Or maybe the Christians are just like any other group? Some are bad, some are good, some do porn, some wait until marriage to have sex.
If being Christian made people so much different, why are Republican politicians ever caught in a sex scandal? (especially - gasp - a gay sex scandal!) Why are priests molesting young boys? This question must be answered folks!
Almost every single Politician claims to be religious. So why are they so corrupt, and self serving? Political scandals are so numerous lately that it is hard to keep track of them.
So lets admit that what everyone is being told is impossible. If religion gives us morals, why are Christians just as likely to divorce as Atheists? Why did our divorce rate go up at all? We are still 80% religious in the US aren’t we?
Myself, I take option #3:
People are just people. Morals change over time and religion just moves along with it. We do not stone people anymore, yet the Bible tells us to do so. You would think that Commandment #1 would be “Release your slaves you idiots, slaver is wrong!” but God did not seem to think that was too important at the time I guess. Ultimately, there are good and bad Christians, good and bad Atheists, good and bad Muslims, etc. What is amazing is that if you are an Atheist, this statement is Obvious with a capital ‘O’. So obvious you are probably annoyed at reading it. It is like me telling writing an article about how the earth is round. It is so obvious it is not worth writing about. Yet to others, this idea is alien, and threatening. It is an amazing world we live in. We all see the same blue sky every day, yet we all argue that reality is what WE say it is.
If we all understood this idea though, we might have a chance at peace in the world, don’t you think? Yes there are ‘Muslim Extremists’. The very definition of the phrase explains they are *extreme*. They are not indicative of the entire group, otherwise we would just call terrorists ‘Muslims’. So why do most ‘Christians’ I know hate, fear or at the least dislike, Muslims as a whole?
Because Religion enforces the idea that those who are ‘in your group’ are Good, while those that are outside your group are Bad. And in my eyes that is the real truth, and the real tragedy.
